Our Vision for Leagues
Pickleball leagues
built differently.

Pickleball games are 12 minutes, not 2 hours. You can't run a league the way you would for tennis or volleyball. The best format preserves what makes open play great: lots of games, lots of different opponents, all in one competitive night. That format is fixed partner round robin, every week — and Shuffle is what makes it possible.

paddle
Pickleball is fundamentally different. Games are 12 minutes, not 2 hours. You play dozens of games in a session, not one. Leagues need to be built around that reality.
trophy
Maximize games, opponents, and competition. The best league format gives every team lots of games, different opponents every week, and a competitive environment — all in a single night.
shuffle
Shuffle is what makes it all possible. Without Shuffle, you couldn't execute on fixed partner round robin every week. It was built specifically to bring this league vision to life.
Our Recommended Format
Shuffle is built for
fixed partner leagues.
Builds round by round. Teams are randomly matched each round, the same way Popcorn works for rotate. No pre-set pools or brackets to build before the night starts.
Late arrivals are no problem. A team walks in 20 minutes late? Add them and keep going. Pool play requires everyone present before you can start.
Balances opponents across the full season. Shuffle tracks matchups league-wide. By season end, every team has played every other team roughly equally, with equal byes.
bracket
Switching to Bracket for championship night. Change the final session to Bracket format and seed it directly from your league standings. No manual seeding required.
shuffle Choosing Your Format
Shuffle vs. Pool Play.

Two ways to run a fixed partner league. Here's how they compare.

shuffle Shuffle
pool_play Pool Play
Round format
Timed rounds — games on a clock
Games play to completion
Late arrivals
Add them mid-session
All teams must be present before start
Early departures

No flexibility
Opponent balancing
Automatic across the full season
Manual or not available
Best for
Leagues that want flexibility and maximum games
Groups that prioritize full-length games
Shuffle = maximum flexibility, but requires timed rounds. Some players or leagues may not love this.
Pool Play = no timed rounds, but zero flexibility on attendance.
Max's take: Even for DUPR-focused leagues, we'd still lean toward timed rounds. But if your group strongly prefers playing games to completion, pool play is a solid option.
shuffle Logic Behind the Scenes
The magic happening
behind the scenes.

When you run a fixed partner league on Pickleheads, the system is doing a lot of work you never have to think about.

balance
Automatic opponent balancing. The system tracks every matchup across the entire league duration. You don't seed, you don't schedule — it handles all of it.
sync
Unique matchups every week. If you only played half the teams last week, you'll play the other half this week. By season end, every team has played every other team roughly equally.
complete
Just mark who's there and start the round. No spreadsheets, no pre-planning. Add the teams that showed up, hit start, and Shuffle builds balanced rounds automatically.
web_page Demo: Watch how over 6 weeks, every team plays every other team once — with equal court time.
New: Team Management
Everything we built
to keep teams consistent.

The biggest headache in fixed partner leagues isn't the format. It's keeping teams clean week to week. Different names, duplicate entries, partners who don't both confirm. We built a full team management suite to handle all of it — and many of these features also work in one-off shuffle and pool play fixed partner events.

Global team name changes. Change a team name once and it updates across the league — session pages, signup pages, and standings. Visible to organizers and players alike.
Add a Team. Pulls in every team from your league standings. One click adds them to the next session. No searching, no re-entering names, no duplicate risk.
Merge Teams. Two entries for the same team in your standings? Pick which name to keep. Stats combine. Session records update everywhere.
Team substitutions. Add a sub to any team mid-week. Their results count toward the original team's standings, not a new random entry.
users_group
Players only see their active team. When signing up for a league session, players see their established team — not a list of every team. No confusion, no accidental duplicates.
Team Management Demo
Now let's dig into teams.

During the demo, we'll cover four things:

The Add a Team flow. Only your league's teams appear. Select them all and add everyone in seconds.
Auto-partner add. One player accepts the invite, their partner is automatically added to the session.
Edit Lineup. Change a team name and watch it update on the session page, future sessions, and the standings.
Merge Teams. Combining duplicate entries so the standings stay clean all season.
Teams — Recap
Teams stay clean.
Week to week.
Team names visible everywhere. Confirmed player list, session pages, and standings all show the team name. No more guessing which player is on which team.
Auto-partner add with team association. When a player accepts an invite to a future league session, they're automatically added with their established team.
Players can't create new teams mid-league. When signing up, they only see their league-associated team. No accidental duplicates.
Merge and clean up anytime. Combined duplicate standings, rename teams, and swap subs. Every change updates across the full league.
trophy Getting Started
The easiest path to get
started with invites.
Week 1

Send the invite link. Players build their own teams.

Share the invite link with your group. Each player joins and sees a prompt: "Who's your partner?"
They send the link to their partner. Partner clicks, confirms, and the team is created.
One player confirms for a future session — their partner is added automatically.
Week 2+

Your teams are set. The rest is automatic.

Share the invite link for the next session. When a player clicks to join, the system already knows their team — they'll only see their league-affiliated partner.
One partner confirms, the other is added automatically. No one re-selects their partner each week.
Want to skip invites? Tap Add a Team — it pre-populates with every team from your league standings. Add one or bulk-add all confirmed teams in seconds.
Note: Fixed partner league creation is currently available on desktop only; mobile support for league creation is coming soon.

More tools to keep
your league data clean.

Fixed partner leagues are live and running. Here's what we're working on next to make them even smoother.

sync
Swap Player. Had a sub play under a guest entry? Swap their results to the right Pickleheads account. Stats and league standings update retroactively. Works for both rotate and fixed partner formats.
gauntlet
Fixed Partner Gauntlet. A seeded fixed partner format that runs round by round. Built for leagues that want skill-based matchups each week instead of random.
